🔧 Tools Required
- T20 Torx bit
- Phillips screwdriver
- 8mm + 10mm socket & ratchet
- Plastic trim tools
- Electrical tape
- Torch
- Wire / coat hanger (for cable routing)
- Double-sided tape (to secure module if needed)
⚠️ Before You Start
✅ Disconnect the negative battery terminal to avoid fault codes
✅ Cover trim surfaces with cloth/towel to prevent scratches
✅ Do NOT plug power into the new screen until wiring is fully connected
✅ 99% of install issues are caused by:
- Loose quadlock
- AUX not selected
- Wrong DIP switch setting
- MOST/fibre optic not transferred
1️⃣ Remove Existing Screen & Head Unit
- Use a trim tool to remove the centre trim/hazard switch panel → Best place to pry: bottom edge of trim
- Remove the T20 screws holding the climate panel + radio/head unit
- F30 = 4 screws
- F20/F21 etc. may have 2 top screws + lower clips
- Gently pull the panel forwards and disconnect plugs if needed
- Remove the OEM screen (2x Torx screws)
- Remove the head unit (2x Torx) and unplug the main quadlock harness
2️⃣ Wiring the New Harness
- Take the OEM quadlock plug and insert it into the female quadlock of the new harness
- Insert the male quadlock from the new harness back into the BMW head unit
- If your car has a fibre optic cable (MOST loop), transfer it to the new harness If you skip this, you will lose audio.
- Ensure the AUX passthrough cable is connected (pre-installed on the harness)
- Route the following cables to the screen area:
- LVDS (video cable)
- Power connector
- USB extension (optional – glovebox recommended)
3️⃣ First Power-On Test (Before Reassembly)
✅ Do NOT refit trim yet
✅ Plug the power cable into the new screen last
✅ Reconnect negative terminal
✅ Turn ignition on
To switch between OEM & new system:
→ Hold MENU button on iDrive controller for 3 seconds
→ Touching the screen in OEM mode also switches back to new system
If the screen turns on → proceed to configuration
If the screen is black / flashing / wrong size → see:
➡️ “Fixing Screen Resolution / Flickering” (linked article)
4️⃣ USB, Microphone & Optional Camera Routing
| Cable | Purpose | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| USB | CarPlay/Android Auto + file transfer | Can be routed to glovebox or centre console |
| Mic (optional) | Only needed if OEM mic not used | Hide behind A-pillar trim |
| Rear camera RCA | Only needed if installing aftermarket camera | Route to boot via interior trim |
5️⃣ Final Assembly
✅ Secure wiring so nothing rattles
✅ Push head unit + screen back into original mounts
✅ Re-fit trim panels in reverse order
✅ Remove protective tape/cloth
✅ Final ignition test
If Something Isn’t Working
🔍 90% of install problems are fixed by checking:
| Issue | Likely Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No sound | AUX not selected, fibre optic not transferred | See “Audio Troubleshooting” |
| No display | Wrong LVDS port, loose connector | Check both ends of cable |
| Screen flicker / zoomed | Wrong resolution selected | See “Screen Resolution Fix” |
| CarPlay not connecting | Used charge-only cable | Use data cable / enable Bluetooth first |
