⚠️ Note: This guide applies specifically to the Bavarian Automotive CarPlay & Android Auto Retrofit Interface (SKU: BA-VW-MMI1).
Apple CarPlay
- On your iPhone, turn on WiFi and Bluetooth.
- Pair your iPhone with the retrofit box via Bluetooth (device name shown on screen).

- CarPlay will launch automatically.
Alternative wired connection: plug iPhone into the retrofit USB port → CarPlay launches instantly.
Android Auto
- Install the Android Auto app (if not pre-installed).
- Enable WiFi and Bluetooth on your phone.
- Pair Bluetooth with the retrofit box.
- Accept Android Auto permissions when prompted.
- Android Auto launches automatically.
Alternative wired connection: connect via USB cable → Android Auto launches instantly.
Configuring to Use OEM Bluetooth (Optional)
Some VW models support OEM Bluetooth audio streaming. In these cars, you can route CarPlay/Android Auto audio through the original VW Bluetooth system instead of AUX.
- Enter the MMI Setup Menu → System Settings.
- Select Use Car’s BT Channel = ON.
- The retrofit system will reboot.
- Pair your phone with the OEM VW Bluetooth (and retrofit box).
- CarPlay/Android Auto will now handle display & apps, while the OEM system handles calls and music.
⚠️ Limitations when using OEM Bluetooth:
- Screen mirroring and some wireless functions (e.g. AirPlay) will not work.
- Audio may have a slight delay compared to AUX AMI.
Audio Output (Default)
- If your VW does not support OEM Bluetooth Audio Streaming → set head unit to AUX/AMI.
- Always ensure AUX volume is not muted (recommended level: 10).
- ⚠️ You cannot use VW Radio/DAB and CarPlay/Android Auto audio at the same time.
Troubleshooting
- No sound: check OEM Bluetooth vs AUX/AMI selection.
- CarPlay not launching: delete pairing and re-pair via Bluetooth.
- Weak wireless connection: move WiFi antenna away from metal or change WiFi channel (36, 169, 6).
